To become a Naturalized citizen, you must meet several requirements before applying: A Legal Permanent Resident (Green Card holder”) for 5 years, or 3 years if based on marriage to a US citizen At least 18 years old Good moral character English & Civics Continuous residence Physical presence Answer a few questions to see if you can apply Or read an overview of the requirements 1 OF 1 Age To apply, you or your dependent must be at least 18 years old at the time of submitting Form N-400. Good Moral Character Your conduct must measure up to the standards of average citizens in the community. Continuous Residence To become a citizen, you must have lived and maintained residence within the United States for a specific period of time. You must have 5 years of continuous residence in the U.S. If you are married to a U.S. citizen, the requirement is 3 years of continuous residence (while married to the U.S. citizen spouse) Traveling for long periods of time outside of the United States can disrupt your continuous residence.
